School Readiness and Expectations
Kindergarten Readiness
- I can go to the bathroom by myself
- I can listen to instructions and follow them
- I can work with others as part of a group
- I know some or all of my alphabet letters and some sounds
- I can count above 10
- I can listen to a story and talk about it
- I can be away from my parent (social maturity)
- I can play quietly by myself (without TV or adult supervision)
- Someone reads to me every day
- I play well with other children
- I know the basic shapes
- I participate in physical activity every day
- I can recognize basic colors
- I can carry through with some responsibilities, jobs, or chores
- I can take turns
- I know my parents’ names
- I sing songs often
- I can cut all kinds of pictures with my scissors
- I know my phone number
- I know my address
- I can draw and color
- I know the day and month of my birthday
First Grade Readiness
- Read 20 minutes each day
- Answer questions about reading
- Practice counting, adding, and subtracting
- Read 20 minutes a day (Raz Kids is highly recommended!)
- Tell and write summaries of reading
- Math Facts (addition and subtraction) to 20
- Knowledge of time and money
Third Grade Readiness
- Read 20 minutes daily
- Write a paragraph about what you read
- Strong understanding of place value, time, and money
Fourth Grade Readiness
- Read 20 minutes daily
- Write a paragraph about what you read
- Strong understanding of basic multiplication and division
Fifth Grade Readiness
With the new more rigorous core, all students should start 5th grade being able to multiply and divide up to 12×12 quickly and accurately. If your child can’t do this, please have them practice flash cards, games, etc., at least 20 minutes a day. Students should also be reading daily to keep up decoding and comprehension skills.
